Three department heads gave reports to the Winder City Council during the council's meeting Sept. 13, 2011.

  • Financial Director Leslie Henderson presented the mayor and council with two awards her department received from the Governor’s Finance Officers Association for Outstanding Financial Reporting in the 2011 fiscal year.
  • Police Chief Dennis Dorsey reported a 13 percent decrease in major crimes and a 19 percent decrease in minor crimes over last year's numbers. Dorsey said his department is exceeding its goal of a decrease of 5 percent in all crimes for the 2012 fiscal year.
Dorsey also reported that his department will participate in Georgia’s Child Safety Belt Week from Sept. 18 through 24. The state-wide campaign focuses on bringing awareness to child deaths and injuries due to improper restraint. Sept. 24 is National Seat-Check Saturday. On this day, the police department will randomly check the restraints of children throughout the city. If a child is found to be properly secured, the child will receive a free T-shirt at no cost to the city.
  • Newly-appointed Fire Chief Matt Whiting reported that his department responded to 81 rescue calls last month with an average response time of 3:57.
