Construction Started on Site for Aldi Store

The discount grocery store is one of several developments in the works within the Winder city limits.

Construction has begun at the Winder site where a discount grocery store will be built. 

Winder City Planner Barry Edgar said representatives with Aldi had mentioned the project would likely be complete by the end of summer.

The Aldi project at the corner of West May Street and Horton Street is one of several planned developments within the city limits.

Developments either under review, under construction or complete

  • An addition to the  on West Candler Street is under construction
  • Stratford Court — Construction shoul dbegin in the next few months on the proposed 64-unit senior living facility across from the Villas at Winder on Jefferson Highway
  • The Winder Planning Department been working with several development companies during the due diligence process prior to the companies acquiring failed and defunct developments

  • Winder Downtown Streetscape Project — Project is on the Georgia Department of Transportation's letting schedule for fall 2012. According to the plannning department, this project is very complicated as GDOT has two design projects going at one time, one being the Transportation Enhancement Project (the Winder Streetscape Project), and the second being a maintenance project for the North Broad Street travel lanes. The Streetscape Project and the maintenance project will be bid at the same time and both projects will be awarded to one contractor. A major portion of sewer line relocation work associated with the Winder Streetscape Project has been completed and some sewer service lines now need to be re-routed. The necessary gas line relocation work will take place in the next few months. The contract for the downtown water line work has been awarded.
  •  — Demolition is complete and the steel support structure is completed. The screening fence around the construction site will remain until all construction activities are completed. The planning department has consulted with the city's rock mason on how to cover or disguise the vertical steel support structures. The rock mason is to provide a cost estimate for this work as well as a cost estimate for work on the capstone across the top of the wall.
  • Annexation projects — The annexation of properties south of the current Winder City Limits is being investigated, and the 100 percent method of annexation is being pursued. Also,the property owners of the existing unincorporated islands within Winder City Limits will be contacted soon and asked to annex into the city. Letters concerning annexing into the city will be sent to the owners of the 106 land parcels that make up these islands. The Winder Planning Board discussed the unincorporated islands at its May 15 meeting.
  • The planning department is working with Keck & Wood on an East Stephens Street/Georgia Avenue drainage project
  • is under way
  • — Bids were received May 17 and teh contract has been awarded
  • The planning department is working on drainage projects and landscape projects with the streets department

  • New Social Security Office on East Broad Street is complete
  • is substantially complete
  • Georgia Department of Transportation Highway 81 Gateway Beautification Project is complete
  • New Dollar General Store on West Athens Street is complete
  • Lee Street culvert replacement project is complete
