Auburn Releases 2012 Special Events Calendar

From a Valentine's Day social in February to the ceremonial lighting of downtown Auburn for the holiday season in November, this Barrow County city boasts a calendar filled with fun community gatherings all year long.

 

Just last week, the city of Auburn released its recently approved calendar of events for the year 2012.

In a recent statement on the city’s Facebook page, a representative for the city wrote, “We are excited for the opportunity to offer these events and look forward to all the fun!”

Residents of Auburn are encouraged to mark their calendars for the following events throughout the year.

  • Feb. 18: O.W.L.S. (Older, Wiser, Laughing Seniors) Valentine’s Day Social — Free, annual Valentine’s Day senior social that includes a meal, ice cream, cake, punch, games and live entertainment from the Classic City Swing Band from Athens. 6 to 9 p.m. at Fellowship Hall.
  • April 7: Fifth annual Springfest and Easter Egg Hunt — Free, annual Springfest will include a visit from the Easter Bunny, contests, games and an Easter egg hunt. 2 to 4 p.m. at .
  • April 14: Spring Gardening Expo — Featuring beautiful spring flowering plants, herbs and vegetables plus landscaping tips and workshops with garden experts. Free to attend. 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at .
  • April 14: Georgia Piedmont Art Center’s Spring Phling — All day outdoor fine arts and crafts festival in downtown Auburn. Free to attend.
  • April 20 through 21: Earth Day Clean-Up — Residents are invited to bring their old computers, office equipment, scrap metal and other items to dispose of properly. All day event. Location TBD.
  • April 22 through 28: Georgia Cities Week — Weeklong series of events and activities that give the city of Auburn an opportunity to share information about the valuable services it provides to residents and how the city can positively impact their quality of life.  This year’s theme is “The Magic of Cities”.
  • April 28: For the Love of Dogs — Festival in honor of man’s best friend that features contests, tracking, obedience, cart pulling, herding and much more. Free to attend. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in downtown Auburn.
  • May 19: Armed Forces Day Parade and Celebration — Family-friendly event designed to say “thank you” to members of the armed forces with a theme of “Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow”. Music, food, vendors, drill competition and more. Free to attend. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in downtown Auburn.
  • June 30 through July 1: Independence Day Celebration — Two days filled with family fun, food, music, games and activities. Fireworks light up the night sky July 1. Free to attend. All day event in downtown Auburn.
  • Sept. 8: Georgia Piedmont Art Center’s Harvest of Art – All day outdoor fine arts and crafts festival in downtown Auburn. Free to attend.
  • Oct. 6 through 21: Annual Auburnfest — Celebrate Auburn’s heritage with a fall festival featuring food, music, a family 5K, arts and crafts and more. Free to attend. An entry fee is required for the 5K. All day event in downtown Auburn.
  • Oct. 19 through 20: Great American Clean-Up — Residents are invited to bring their old computers, office equipment, scrap metal, and other items to dispose of properly. All day event. Location TBD.
  • Oct. 28: Third annual Spider Web Spooktacular — Dress up in your finest spooky costume and head to downtown Auburn for a Halloween-themed all day event that includes games, crafts, candy, a costume contest and a spooky movie in the park. Free to attend.
  • Nov. 17: Sounding Off the Christmas Season — Auburn kicks off the holiday season with an event that features food, caroling, craft vendors and the ceremonial lighting of downtown Auburn. Don’t forget your camera for pictures with Santa and his reindeer. Free to attend. All day event in downtown Auburn.

The city of Auburn also features recurring monthly events, such as Movies in the Park the second Saturday of each month from April through September at Whistlestop Park at sundown, farmer’s markets from 2 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays at the Burel Park Pavilion from June through September and community yard sales from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. the second Saturday of each month from April through September at Burel Park.
