Winder City Government to Undergo Changing of the Guard

The city's new mayor and council members prepare to assume their seats at the council table.

As a result of the November 2011 elections, Winder’s Mayor George “Chip” Thompson III was ousted by challenger, fellow council member David Maynard.

Thompson’s final council meeting in the role of mayor took place Tuesday, Dec. 6. Also in attendance at the meeting was outgoing council member Frank Dunagan of Ward 4, who opted not to run for re-election.

Shortly following the new year, the incoming members of Winder’s City Council will take their oaths of office at the at 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5. These members include Mayor-elect David Maynard, incumbent for Ward 2 Councilman Charlie Eberhart, Ward 4 Councilman-elect Travis Singley and, assuming the seat vacated by Maynard, Councilman-at-large-elect Lamar Larry Evans.

Mere days after the changing of the guard takes place, the new council members will get right down to business with a city council work session scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 9, and a regular city council meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10. Both meetings will be held at the .
