Bethlehem Contracts with Barrow County for Elections

A recap of the May 2 meeting of the Bethlehem Town Council.

  • Who met: Bethlehem Town Council
  • Date: Monday, May 2, 2011
  • Location:
  • Who was present: Mayor Sandy McNab; council members Tommy Parten, Larry Jones, Scott H. Morgan and Tommy Buchanan; town attorney Ron Bennett; town clerk Kathy Bridges
  • Top agenda items:
  1. The council voted to pay Barrow County to take care of election duties at the cost of $1 per registered voter for unlimited yearly elections. The agreement is similar to one the county has with the city of Winder. The county will supply all machines and ballots, as well as hire and train all workers. The contract is for one year of services, at which time the council can cancel with 90 days notice.
  2. The council granted a special-use permit to Tim White so he can open a produce and plant market at 724 Manger Ave. White was also granted an exemption from the ordinance requiring all buildings facing Ga. Highway 11 to have a brick or stone front. The stand will be open air, with no walls. "There wouldn't be any place to put brick or rock," White said.
  3. The council voted to permit a sign variance for Subway on Christmas Avenue, allowing the business to add its sign to the existing Kangaroo sign. With the addition, the sign will be larger than current code allows. According to Phillip Wilnet, the property owner, "they will be glad to advertise on that sign … get some of that highway traffic."
  4. The council designated May 20 as Clean Up Day. This is a day for Bethlehem's residents to get rid of unwanted items by simply taking them to the curb. The extra trash will be picked up and hauled away at no charge to residents.
  5. The council voted to not acquire a credit card machine for city hall and to not allow a separate pavilion reservation fee for groups only using the pavilion and bathrooms. Town clerk Kathy Bridges had received requests for a lower price from groups not wishing to use the kitchen. The current fee of $100 for pavilion reservation and $150 for pavilion and park reservation — both of which include bathroom and kitchen use — will remain in effect.
