Barrow County Settles with Former Inmate Alleging Abuse

According to the Barrow Journal, commissioners voted recently to approve a $10,000 settlement with Phillip Clifford Wells Jr.

Members of the Barrow County Board of Commissioners voted Oct. 9, 2012, to approve a $10,000 settlement with a former county inmate, the Barrow Journal reports. 

According to the a post on the newspaper's website, Phillip Clifford Wells Jr. filed a federal lawsuit against the Barrow County Detention Center and four jail staff. 

The president of the Georgia NAACP held a press conference in June 2011 on the steps of the historic courthouse, where he cited five documented cases of alleged abuse by deputies with the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office and reports of inmates being abused while incarcerated at the county detention center, including Wells' allegations.
