World War I Bomb Found at Winder Residence Detonated by Military Personnel

A military device found in a Winder resident's yard was determined to be safe to handle by the United States Air Force Explosive Ordinance Device Unit out of Dobbins Air Force Base early Wednesday morning.

A World War I bomb found in a Winder resident's yard was determined to be safe to handle by the United States Air Force Explosive Ordinance Device Unit out of Dobbins Air Force Base early Wednesday morning. 

The University of Georgia Police Department Bomb Disposal Unit was called in to evaluate and dispose of a military device at a residence off Creekwood Road in Winder on Tuesday, May 24.

After investigation by the bomb disposal unit in joint contact with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the evacuation for a unknown explosive device has been expanded to include four additional homes. The FBI advised personnel on scene to expand the evacuation area and to leave the device alone until the arrival of an Explosive Ordinance Demolition Team from Dobbins Air Force Base.

According to deputies, the device was a round metal cylinder with four fins attached to it. The homeowner was working in his yard when he discovered the military device.  

The bomb was taken to the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office range and detonated by the military personnel on scene.
