A suspect who ran from an officer with the Winder Police Department and refused to comply with commands once he tripped and fell was Tasered three times.
According to an incident report, the officer was in the Glenwood area of Winder on Oct. 10 looking for a suspect who had reportedly stabbed someone in the neck. The officer observed a man wearing clothes that fit the description of the suspect's attire and asked the man to come speak with him. The man ran. The suspect was chased across Elm Street and behind residences on Capitol Avenue before he tripped and fell. The officer drew his Taser and ordered the suspect to show both his hands.
When the suspect put his right hand in his pocket, he was again ordered to show his hands but refused to comply.
"At that moment I decided I was not going to risk getting stabbed by a suspect so I ordered him again to show me his hand or he would be tased," the officer wrote in the incident report.
Despite being Tased once, the suspect again put his right hand in his pocket.
"Fearing the suspect was about to attempt to remove a weapon I gave a verbal command for him to remove his hand and when he failed to comply, I tased him again," the officer wrote.
After being Tased three times, the suspect complied with the officer's commands and was handcuffed and placed under arrest. A glass smoking pipe of the type commonly used to smoke cocaine was found in his pocket, according to the incident report.
The suspect was identified as 53-year-old Kenneth Michael Slayton of 600 Wood Ave. in Winder and was not the suspect police were originally looking for. Slayton did have warrants out for his arrest. He was charged with parole violation, willful obstruction of law enforcement officers, possession and use of drug-related objects and probation violation.
When the officer asked the suspect why he ran, the man said he was just scared. The officer observed the suspect had defecated on himself during the incident and also asked how the Taser felt. The man said it "hurt very bad."
