Vacant House Destroyed by Fire

Drivers on Ga. Highway 316 reported seeing smoke and flames from the fire.

A house that stood vacant for several years was destroyed by fire Sunday night.

At 9:18 p.m. Sunday, communication officers with Barrow County Emergency Services received the first of numerous 911 calls reporting a possible structure fire on Harrison Mill Road near Ga. Highway 316.

“Smoke was visible for several miles and flames were visible on Highway 316,” said Lt. Scott Dakin, spokesman for BCES. “This resulted in numerous calls from drivers in the area.”

Engines 3 and 1, Med 3, Ladder 7 and Battalion 1 responded to the area and found a vacant home at 733 Harrison Mill Road fully involved in flames. Due to the extent of the fire, upon arrival, firefighters went into a defensive mode of operation and spent several hours on the scene extinguishing the fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
