Unattended Cooking Leads to Home Fire

Residents are asked to be cautious when cooking.

Barrow County Emergency Services is reminded residents to never leave food cooking unattended after a home fire Friday, May 4.  

About 5:21 p.m., communication officers received a 911 call reporting a fire in the 700 block of Dee Kennedy Road.

Engines 5 and 4 and Med 5 responded and found smoke in the home. The fire was located in the kitchen. Prior to firefighters' arrival the resident had extinguished the majority of the fire, and crews removed the smoke from the home and hot embers that remained on the stove.

“This was the result of unattended cooking,” Lt. Scott Dakin, public information officer, said in a news release. “We want to remind citizens that when they are cooking they need to remain in the kitchen. Cooking is the leading cause of house fires in America, by staying in the kitchen and watching the food we can greatly reduce the number of fires.”

A fire was also reported early Thursday evening, May 3.

Communication officers received a 911 call reporting a fire in the area of Parker Road and Ga. Highway 211. Upon arrival, crews found heavy smoke coming from a barn near the intersection. Upon making access to the barn, firefighters found a tractor fully involved in fire.

Engines 1 and 6, Med 1 and Battalion 1 responded to the call. Firefighters made an effective attack on the fire and were able to control the flames before they could extend to the structure of the barn.
