Three Killed in Highway 82 Crash

Alcohol is suspected as a contributing factor.

A two-vehicle crash claimed the lives of three Winder residents Saturday evening.

Georgia State Patrol public information officer Gordy Wright said the crash occurred around 10:50 p.m. on Georgia Highway 82, approximately a tenth of a mile west of Holsenbeck School Road.

David Michael Varnum, 53; John Willis Collins, 61 and Wanda Jean Collins, 54, were killed in the crash.

According to Wright, Varnum was driving his 1995 Chevrolet Camaro east on Highway 82 when he crossed the centerline and struck the Collins’ 2001 Ford Taurus head-on.

“Alcohol is suspected as a contributing factor and a blood test will be performed on Mr. Varnum to confirm,” Wright said in a released statement.

There were no other injuries.

So, do we want to keep marijuana illegal and alcohol LEGAL? You know, it's really amazing, if you take a look, daily, at your individual Sheriff's Department's website, specifically the arrestee login, you'll see that it apparently makes NO difference how much alcohol ruins lives through alcoholism, NO difference how drinking and alcoholism affects the people around them, NO difference how may people alcohol kills via traffic wrecks or physical illness, NO difference how much money a DUI costs and the shame it brings upon their family and friends...people just keep on drinking and driving!! It's simply ridiculous. Guaranteed in Gwinnett alone, there is an average of 15 to 20 DUI arrests per day! And , that's just an average! I realize that prohibition didn't work back in the 30's or 40's, so what do we do? It's too big now to make alcohol illegal. In fact, the 40 year war on marijuana is also NOT working, the fact that it is illegal is making the criminal element richer and richer and killing tons of innocent civilians and LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS every week. Just like alcohol prohibition didn't work, you've just got to make it legal, let the government control it and take the fun and lucrative enterprise out of the hands of the crooks, specifically the Mexican cartel, and the tax alone would get the U.S. out of debt!!! With alcohol, I simply don't know the answer other than making DUI a felony? What do you think?

Drunks stink! The only punishment strong enough for killing innocent drivers is that the drunk is killed in the same accident. At least they won't do it again. I am sick of hearing DUI drivers being on the roads. Absolutely NO excuse for getting stinking drunk and then getting behind the wheel. It makes me FURIOUS.
