Statham Police are Issuing Warnings to Drivers Violating New Ordinance

The Statham City Council recently passed an ordinance that prohibits parking against the flow of traffic along Broad Street.

The began issuing warnings to drivers violating a new city ordinance while parking on Broad Street on Monday.

The Statham City Council recently passed along the roadway where is located.

According to Statham Police Chief Steve Martin, parking along Broad Street during school hours was a problem last school year, with several children almost being run over and at least three incidents in which cars almost collided.

Statham police will continue to issue warnings for a month to alert drivers of the new ordinance and are encouraging the use of the front and rear parking lot at the school as much better and safer alternatives.

“Some parents are getting upset because they can't park as they had in years past and we have already had three parents set very bad examples for their children by getting irate and yelling at the officer who was working the school crossing,” Martin wrote in an online post.  “Please be respectful to the officers who are trying to get the word out by issuing warnings to those who don't already know about the new ordinance.

“I hope everyone understands that the protection of the children in and around the school is our main concern,” he continued.

Police will begin to issue citations to those in violation of the city ordinance beginning Sept. 12. Concerns or complaints about this should be directed to Chief Martin by calling at 770-725-5992 ext. 313.
