Six Arrested During Check of Probationers and Parolees

Law enforcement officials made contact with 55 individuals during the sweep.

The Winder Police Department, the Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles, Georgia State Probation, the Barrow County Sheriff's Office and the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office teamed up on the evening of Aug. 29 to check on dozens of individuals on active probation or parole for offenses related to sex crimes or drug sales.

Within a 5-hour span, a total of 35 law enforcement officers made contact with 55 out of the 67 individuals who were the focus of the proactive enforcement effort coordinated by the Winder Police Department. Law enforcement officials visited the homes or places of employment of the targeted individuals and, during the course of the evening, arrested six for crimes discovered during the visits.

According to a press release from the Winder Police Department, five individuals were in possession of illegal narcotics. One of the five, a convicted felon, was arrested after being found in possession of a shotgun along with a large quantity of drugs. The sixth person arrested was found to be intoxicated -- a violation itself -- and was immediately drug tested. The drug test was positive for marijuana and cocaine use.

Winder Police Chief Dennis Dorsey said his department's goal is to reduce recidivism rates in the community.

"I am proud of the collaborative effort between all the law enforcement agencies involved in this endeavor and its results," he said in a released statement. "We plan to continue this proactive approach in an effort to prevent and deter future crimes of this nature from occurring.”
