The Barrow County Sheriff's Office posted the following scam alert on their Facebook page on Sept. 20:
It has been brought to our attention at the Barrow County Sheriff's Office that there are people trying to solicit money from citizens for the Barrow County Sheriff's Office and The Winder Police Department here in Barrow County. The person or persons are advising the public they are collecting money to help both agencies to buy equipment and safety items for the deputies and police officers.
The Barrow County Sheriff's Office and The Winder Police Department DO NOT solicit funds for budget purposes. Any funds that are solicted by either agency are all used for local youth programs and local charities.
No one is authorized to collect money for either agency without a signed agency letter from Sheriff Jud Smith or Chief Dennis Dorsey. Without a signed letter from the Sheriff or Chief we ask that no one give money to any organization.
