Resident Asks Deputy if He Can Shoot Someone Stealing Property from His Shed

The resident said a motorcycle had been stolen from his property and he had not initially reported the theft because "he figured someone needed the motorcycle more than him."

A Winder resident's main concern when speaking to a Barrow County Sheriff's Office deputy recently was whether or not he could shoot someone entering his shed, according to an incident report.

The man said someone had stolen a Honda Z50 motorcycle, valued at $800, from the shed March 22, and he had not initially reported the theft because "he figured someone needed the motorcycle more than he did." The resident contacted the sheriff's office March 25 because someone had again entered his shed.

According to the incident report, the man's main concern was whether or not he could shoot someone attempting to take property from his shed.

"I explained to (the resident) that it would be best if he were to contact the Sheriff’s Office if the suspect returned to the residence and that I could not advise him when he should 'put someone to sleep' as he stated," the deputy wrote in the incident report.
