Police Say Duo Who Reported Armed Robbery had Actually Stolen Cash

The money was reportedly taken from a safe at a Winder business.

A Winder police officer who responded to a report of an armed robbery in progress on June 22 found that the complainants were the actual culprits, according to an incident report.

The complainants, a man and a woman, told the officer that two men wearing masks entered C & S Upholstery on Midland Avenue and demanded the contents of a safe. The thieves emptied the safe and reportedly left in a gray Buick. The complainants were unsure what was taken, so the woman’s father was called to identify the contents.

When the father arrived, he told police about $35,000 was inside the safe.

When an officer canvassed the building looking for video cameras a vehicle was found sitting outside the business. The male complainant said he had borrowed the vehicle from his boss. Upon searching the truck, an officer found a bag behind the seat containing several white envelopes with cash inside. The father identified the bag as his. The male complainant then told police he took the money, which amounted to $29,200, from the safe.

The complainants, Margarita Campos, 19, and Alexander Alzate, 22, both of 216 Scott Circle in Winder, were placed under arrest and charged with false report of a crime, theft by taking, obstruction and false statements.
