Pan Left Unattended on Stove Sparks Kitchen Fire

Barrow County Emergency Services reminds residents to never leave food cooking unattended.

A pan left on a stove unattended started a kitchen fire at a Bethlehem resident Wednesday.

Communication officers with Barrow County Emergency Services received a 911 call reporting a house fire in the 400 block of Wilshire Lane. Upon arrival, firefighters found light smoke showing in the house.

“The homeowner advised that the fire had started in the kitchen but he believed it was almost out,” Lieutenant Alan Williams said in a news release.

Engine 7, Engine 4, Med 3 and Med 7 responded to this call. Upon entry into the home, firefighters found the fire had been almost extinguished with some fire still showing from the microwave and cabinets. Firefighters used a fire extinguisher to put the remaining fire out.

“The fire started due to a pan that was left unattended on the stove and extended to the microwave and cabinets,” Lieutenant Scott Dakin, public information officer for BCES, said in the release. “We want to remind citizens that you always need to stay in the kitchen when cooking. In just seconds a fire can start and grow out of control.”
