Off-duty Barrow Deputy Detains Shoplifting Suspect in Oconee

A Winder man is accused of shoplifting from Wal-mart on Epps Bridge Parkway in Oconee County on July 27, 2012. An arrest does not mean a conviction.

An off-duty deputy was in the right place at the right time July 27 to assist with the arrest of a shoplifting suspect at in Oconee County.

According to an incident report on file at the Oconee County Sheriff's Office, a loss prevention employee witnessed a man leave the store about 6:15 p.m. with items that had not been paid for and attempt to load them into a vehicle in the parking lot. The employee also happened to see Cpl. Brandon Willis of the Barrow County Sheriff's Office, who was off-duty at the time, and asked for his help. 

Willis confronted the suspect, who ignored verbal commands and attempted to flee, according to the report, and Willis had to physically restrain the suspect in order to place handcuffs on him.

Christopher Wade Hass, 42, of Winder, was charged with obstruction of an officer and theft by shoplifting. He was transported to the Oconee County Jail by Oconee Deputy Brad Williams. 

The stolen items — a window air conditioning unit, beer, laundry detergent and bread — were returned to the store.

I grew up in a Winder where doors were not locked and the town was full of folks shopping! SometimesRead More a moonshiner would get caught or the parking meter would run out of time and one would get a parking ticket by one of the three cops in town! Now I keep a weapon handy because of voices and footsteps on the pavement at night! Where are these people coming from and going to after one o'clock in the morning? Why does it take so long for a policeman to show up after a call is made,if they show up at all? I've watched nice homes on my street turn into dumps. They are rented by owners who are only interested in the money and not the quality of people who are renting. Yeah, I keep a weapon and it's loaded for a thief or prowler! When seconds count a cop is only several minutes away,if at all!
