Winder Man Charged with DUI Tells Officer Alcohol Smell is Hand Sanitizer

The following information was taken from incident reports from the Winder Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

The following are summaries of recent incidents to which officers with the Winder Police Department responded.

That alcohol smell is hand sanitizer

A man who was involved in a traffic accident Jan. 7 told an officer the smell of alcohol coming from his person was hand sanitizer. After struggling with field sobriety evaluations, James Victor Power, 21, of 307 Harrison Lane in Winder, was arrested and charged with DUI and improper backing. At the Barrow County Detention Center, the suspect’s first breath test registered a .138 blood alcohol content and the second registered a .139.

Running a red light

Two individuals were arrested Jan. 5 after the vehicle in which they were traveling failed to stop at a red light. When an officer checked the driver’s license, it returned suspended. Carolyn April Rickert, 38, of 489 Shannon Way in Lawrenceville, was arrested and charged with driving on a suspended license and failure to obey a traffic control device. The male passenger, Victor Blaine Pulliam, 37, of 279 Burson Ave. in Bogart, who told the officer he didn’t have a license but would provide his name, was also arrested after central communications confirmed a warrant for his arrest.

I grew up in a Winder where doors were not locked and the town was full of folks shopping! SometimesRead More a moonshiner would get caught or the parking meter would run out of time and one would get a parking ticket by one of the three cops in town! Now I keep a weapon handy because of voices and footsteps on the pavement at night! Where are these people coming from and going to after one o'clock in the morning? Why does it take so long for a policeman to show up after a call is made,if they show up at all? I've watched nice homes on my street turn into dumps. They are rented by owners who are only interested in the money and not the quality of people who are renting. Yeah, I keep a weapon and it's loaded for a thief or prowler! When seconds count a cop is only several minutes away,if at all!
