Man is Tased by Police After Resisting Arrest

The Watkinsville resident was charged with disorderly conduct, public intoxication and obstruction following the June 1 incident.

A Watkinsville resident leaving in downtown Winder recently was Tased when he resisted arrest. 

According to an incident report, the suspect was standing on the rear steps of the building when an officer with the responded to a report of a disorderly subject about 11:30 p.m. June 1. 

The suspect immediately began to walk to a vehicle and entered the passenger side. As the driver began to pull away, the officer heard the suspect yell profanity out the window at several individuals standing near the door.

The officer pursued the vehicle on foot and stopped the driver. Upon making contact with the suspect in the passenger seat, the officer smelled a strong odor of alcoholic beverage on his breath and person. When the officer asked for identification, the suspect refused and the driver informed the officer of the suspect's name and date of birth. 

When the officer asked the suspect to get out of the vehicle, the man said the officer would not be able to force him out. A second officer asked the suspect twice to exit the vehicle before the first officer opened the passenger side door.

According to the report, the suspect  attempted to hold the door closed with his right arm before an officer grabbed his right wrist while another grabbed the man's left shoulder and placed the suspect on the ground. When the suspect refused to place his hands behind his back and attempted to get up, an officer drew his Taser and deployed it into the suspect's back. 

An officer again gave the suspect verbal commands to place his hands behind his back, but the suspect refused to comply until the third command.

Handcuffed, 33-year-old Daniel Lee Hale of 2520 Watson Springs Road in Watkinsville, was checked out by EMS personnel and medically cleared before being transported to the .

Hale was charged with disorderly conduct, public intoxication and obstruction, and Madison County confirmed a valid warrant for Hale's arrest.
