Man Says Stray Bullet Hit Him While He Walked to the Mailbox

He told deputies he was hit in the same knee that needed recent surgery.

The Barrow County Sheriff's Office is investigating the source of what was believed to be a bullet that hit the leg of a man who was walking down the driveway to the mailbox.

The incident occurred Saturday afternoon, March 29, on Englewood Road in Winder.

The man, Billy Sheriff, told deputies he felt something strike him on the inside of the left knee. He walked back to the residence on Englewood Drive to roll up his pants leg and said a piece of a bullet fell out. He told deputies he thought he was hit by a .22 or .25 caliber round.

Sheriff, who said he recently had surgery on the same knee, said he heard gunshots around the time of the injury, which was not serious.

It was not known from where the bullet came. No one else in the area heard any gunshots, but one neighbor said people at a nearby residence frequently shoot a rifle, believed to be a .22. No one was home when a deputy knocked on the door of that residence.

Deputies collected two fragments that were possibly a bullet; the piece that fell out when the victim rolled up his pants leg, and another found near the area he was shot.

The case is under investigation.
