Local Law Enforcement Assists with Manhunt in Oconee County

Deputies with the Barrow County Sheriff's Office and Winder police assisted with a manhunt in Oconee County on Wednesday, Oct. 26.

The announced , two of whom authorities had been chasing on foot near off U.S. Highway 78, which was locked down during the manhunt.

Chief Deputy Lee Weems with the Oconee County Sheriff's Office said the manhunt started when Sgt. Shane Partain attempted to pull over the driver of a vehicle for a traffic violation on U.S. Highway 78 around Ga. Highway 53 and the driver attempted to flee. Near Prince Avenue Christian School, the vehicle stopped and two men jumped out and fled into the woods, while two others surrendered immediately, Weems said.

Oconee County deputies, with assistance from the Georgia State Patrol, the Winder Police Department, and the Barrow County Sheriff's Office, set up a perimeter and, as a precaution, the school was placed on lockdown, Weems said. A K-9 unit was also deployed.
