Local Law Enforcement Agencies Receive HEAT Grants

The Barrow County Sheriff's Office and the Winder Police Department were recently awarded grants from the Georgia Governor's Office of Highway Safety.

Local law enforcement agencies are the recipients of grant money from the Georgia Governor's Office of Highway Safety's HEAT initiative.

The has been awarded $73,700, while the has been awarded $22,300 in grant money.

The HEAT — Highway Enforcement of Aggressive Traffic — initiative focuses on reducing impaired driving crashes, reducing excessive speeding, increasing the safety belt usage rate and educating the public about traffic safety.

Both departments intends to develop and implement strategies to reduce crashes, injuries and fatalities from drugs and alcohol, speed and aggressive driving, and non-use of safety belts within their jurisdiction. The grants went into effect Oct. 1 of this year and will continue until Sept. 30 of 2012.
