Lightning Ignites Auburn House Fire

The house sustained moderate damage to the attic and chimney area.

Two adults have been displaced following a house fire caused by a lightning strike. 

Just after 10 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2012, communication officers with received a 911 call reporting a house fire in the 1500 block of Union Court in Auburn.

Engines 4 and 5, Med 7 and Battalion 1 responded to this fire.

“Upon arrival firefighters found a single story home with moderate fire showing on the roofline,” Battalion Chief Mike Stoops said in a news release. “The fire was located in the back of the residence in the attic.”

Firefighters initiated an aggressive interior attack and were able to extinguish the fire before it spread further. The house sustained moderate damage to the attic and chimney area.

Upon investigation, it was determined the fire had been caused by a lightning strike. Lightning struck the metal chimney case and ignited the wood frame around the chimney.
