Key Stuck in Car Ignition Allows Vehicle Theft but Thief Doesn't Get Far

A suspect who reportedly stole a vehicle from a Williamson Street residence Dec. 8 didn't get far after a wheel was broken striking a sidewalk.

A key stuck in the ignition of a 1997 Ford Crown Victoria allowed a would-be car thief to drive off from a Winder residence Dec. 8, 2012.

An officer with the Winder Police Department was dispatched to the area of Capital Avenue in reference to a possible vehicle accident. Upon arrival, the officer spoke with a Williamson Street resident, who said her grandmother's Crown Victoria had been stolen. Upon hearing a crash, the resident ran outside to find the vehicle gone before reaching Capital Avenue and seeing a suspect run away from the wrecked vehicle.

According to an incident report, the vehicle was disabled at the intersection of Capital Avenue and Elm Street as the rear driver's side wheel was broken after striking the sidewalk. Officers canvassed the area for a possible suspect but none was found.

The resident said the suspect was able to take the car because the key is stuck in the ignition.

I grew up in a Winder where doors were not locked and the town was full of folks shopping! SometimesRead More a moonshiner would get caught or the parking meter would run out of time and one would get a parking ticket by one of the three cops in town! Now I keep a weapon handy because of voices and footsteps on the pavement at night! Where are these people coming from and going to after one o'clock in the morning? Why does it take so long for a policeman to show up after a call is made,if they show up at all? I've watched nice homes on my street turn into dumps. They are rented by owners who are only interested in the money and not the quality of people who are renting. Yeah, I keep a weapon and it's loaded for a thief or prowler! When seconds count a cop is only several minutes away,if at all!
