Improperly Installed and Sealed Wood Stove Pipes Blamed for House Fire

Officials remind citizens all heating systems should be installed according to manufacturer's specifications.

This past weekend, an Auburn home sustained fire and smoke damage which officials blame on improperly installed and sealed wood stove pipes.

Barrow County firefighters were called to the Mary Carter Road home at 4:14 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9.

"Upon arrival of firefighters, smoke was coming from the roof of the home," said Barrow County Emergency Services public information officer Lt. Scott Dakin in a released statement. "Firefighters made a quick attack on the fire and were able to bring it under control within minutes of arrival."

The fire, which originated in the pipes from a recently installed wood stove, damaged the attic and caused smoke damage throughout the home. The pipes, Dakin explained, had been improperly sealed and improperly installed.

With the onset of cold weather, fire officials remind citizens it is important to keep safety in mind.

"If you are installing any heating system, such as electric, gas or wood burning it needs to be installed to manufacturers recommendations," Dakin said. "You should also properly seal all vent seals using proper materials."
