Gwinnett County Sheriff's Deputy from Bethlehem Charged with DUI

The deputy is accused of wrecking a sheriff's department vehicle overnight at Ga. Highway 81 and Double Springs Road in Walton County.

Georgia State Patrol reported that a Gwinnett County Sheriff's Deputy vehicle was involved in a wreck at 1:20 a.m. this morning on Georgia Highway 81 at Double Springs Road in Walton County.

According to the trooper, a Gwinnett County Sheriff's Department vehicle ran off the road, struck an embankment and overturned several times.  In a press release, GSP reported that nobody was around the vehicle when first responders arrived. They later located the driver, a Gwinnett County Sheriff's deputy, at his Bethlehem residence. He had sustained minor injuries. A female passenger was found walking near the crash scene.

The driver, Robert Christopher Matt, 27, was charged with driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident, failing to maintain lane and open container. He was taken to Walton County Jail.

The passenger in the vehicle, Katie Lynn, age 27, from Lawrenceville, was taken by ambulance to Gwinnett Medical for treatment of injuries.
