Gwinnett Police Officer Resigns Following Arrest in Barrow

Brian Kelly was charged with soliciting an act of prostitution.

Gwinnett County police say one of their own arrested here in Barrow County and has since resigned. 

Cpl. Brian Kelly, a former public information officer, was arrested May 31 by the . Kelly was charged with pandering, or soliciting an act of prostitution.

WSBTV reports an undercover Barrow deputy posed as a prostitute in an ad online and arranged a meeting with Kelly at the  in Winder. Sheriff Jud Smith told WSB that Kelly came to an agreement for services with the undercover deputy and exchanged money before he was arrested.

According to a new release by GCPD, Kelly did not inform Barrow officials that he was as an officer for Gwinnett County. Kelly also did not let his supervisors in Gwinnett immediately know of his arrest, as required by GCPD's policy. As a result, Kelly was served with a letter of intent to terminate his employment and, according to the release, opted to resign effective immediately.

Kelly served as GCPD's PIO for approximately two years until 2010. He had been employed with GCPD since 2003.

Smith told WSB that the Barrow County Sheriff's Office has received complaints about prostitution and pandering from area hotel management and guests. Several arrests have been made recently with resulting charges of prostitution and pandering. Check out the recent docket books for more on those arrests.
