Five Homes Evacuated After Bomb found at Winder Residence

The evacuation for a unknown explosive device has been expanded to include four homes in addition to the residence where the device was found.

The University of Georgia Police Department Bomb Disposal Unit was called in to evaluate and dispose of a military device at a residence off Creekwood Road in Winder on Tuesday, May 24.

After investigation by the bomb disposal unit in joint contact with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the evacuation for a unknown explosive device has been expanded to include four additional homes. The FBI advised personnel on scene to expand the evacuation area and to leave the device alone until the arrival of an Explosive Ordinance Demolition Team from Dobbins Air Force Base.

According to deputies on the scene, the device is a round metal cylinder with four fins attached to it. The homeowner was working in his yard when he discovered the military device.
