County Emergency Personnel Respond to 1,013 Calls for Service from Oct. 7-13

Calls for service included small fires and a gas leak.

Communication officers with Barrow County Emergency Services were busy last week with many different types of calls, according to a news release.

From Oct. 7 through 13, communication officers received a total of 3,389 calls into the county communication center, with 1,158 calls coming through the 911 lines. As a result, the communication center dispatched public safety employees to a total of 1,013 incidents. 

Firefighters with Barrow County Emergency Services were dispatched to 133 fire and EMS incidents, which included the following:

  • At 1:04 a.m. Oct. 9, communication officers received a 911 call reporting a tractor trailer on fire on Interstate 85, just south of Exit 126. Upon arrival of Engine 5 and Med 5, firefighters found the rear axle of the cab heavily involved in fire. Firefighters extinguished the fire and checked for extension of flames. The trailer had minor heat and smoke damage to the outside. The fire did not damage the contents of the trailer.
  • At 5:28 p.m. Oct. 12, communication officers received a 911 call reporting a gas leak in the 400 block of Atlanta Highway N.W. Engine 7 responded and firefighters found a vehicle that had been pulled up to the gas pumps for fuel where gas tank on the vehicle had a leak and had leaked gas around the pumps. As a precaution firefighters worked with station employees to shut off the gas pumps and blocked access to the pumps until cleanup of the spill could be completed. 
  • At 6:36 p.m. Oct. 12, communication officers received a 911 call reporting a gas leak inside a house in the 1000 block of Phillips Road. Upon arrival of Engine 3 and Med 3 firefighters found a heavy odor of gas in the residence. It was determined to be a loose line on a gas heater. Firefighters stopped the leak and utilized a fan to remove the gas from the home.
  • On Oct. 13, communication officers received a 911 call reporting a possible fire in a business located near Highway 211 northeast and Grand Hickory Drive. Engine 5 responded and firefighter met the business owner, who reported a small fire in the grill but they had been able to extinguish the flames. Firefighters checked for any possible extension and ventilated the smoke from the business.
