Early Morning House Fire Displaces Family

Residents escaped out a bedroom window after their double-wide trailer caught fire.

A family has been displaced after an early morning fire April 9 damaged their home.

At 2:12 a.m. April 9, communication officers with Barrow County Emergency Services received a 911 call reporting a structure fire at 1023 Cooks Road. Engines 1 and 6, Med 1, Battalion 1 and Deputy Chief John Skinner responded and found a double-wide trailer that was heavily involved in fire.

“Firefighters found fire in over fifty percent of the home,” Lt. Scott Dakin, spokesman for the department, said in a news release. “With this much involvement firefighters had to fight the fire from the exterior of the home.”

The family awoke to heavy fire conditions in the home and had to escape out a bedroom window. As there was no smoke alarms in the home, the family had less time to escape the fire, as they did not have early warning, the release stated. The fire was rapidly brought under control by firefighters; however, the fire had already done significant damage to the home prior to arrival. The family was displaced by the fire and was helped by the American Red Cross. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Fire Investigation Unit.
