Ian and Jennifer Muriu are listed on Facebook as the owners of the Spitfire Restaurant, which is located at the Barrow County Airport.

ORIGINAL REPORT:

The Barrow County Sheriff's Office is investigating a possible murder-suicide in Bethlehem.

Deputies responded to 544 Walton Drive on Monday July 29, after a 911 call reported shots had been fired at the residence. A female had fled the after reportedly hearing her husband, Ian Muriu, fire a weapon inside. The female, later identified as Jennifer Muriu, ran to a neighbor’s house.

Sheriff’s deputies responded and quickly surrounded the residence, where multiple unsuccessful attempts were made to contact anyone inside. Deputies then entered the residence and found 66-year-old Diana Freeman dead of apparent gunshot wounds. Ian Muriu was also found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

While the investigation is ongoing, a news release says the indications at this point are that Ian Muriu shot and killed his mother-in-law before turning the gun on himself. His wife was not physically harmed in the incident.

The sheriff’s office is continuing its investigation of the events that led up to the shooting, including evidence of motive. More information will be released when it becomes available.

My family and I are regulars at Spitfire. In fact, my son and I were there on Sunday at the cookout and nothing seemed unusual. I am shocked and devastated and my thoughts and prayers are with Jennifer and her family. I'm sure in the coming weeks more details will emerge but both of these people have been nothing but kind-hearted enthusiastic people every time I saw them. This just breaks my heart.

It is such a tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers here at Patch are also with the families.
