Crews Respond to Fire at Johns Manville Facility

The fire spread to three levels of the plant, but crews were able to bring the blaze under control with an interior attack.

A fire started early Wednesday morning in a section of the Johns Manville plant where the facility manufactures insulation.

County firefighters responded to the Winder business at 2:14 a.m. after receiving a 911 call.

“Upon arrival firefighters found smoke showing from the structure,” Lt. Scott Dakin, public information officer for Barrow County Emergency Services, said in a news release. “Upon entering the structure we found fire in a section of the building where they manufacture insulation.”

Ladder Truck 7, Engine 4, Engine 5, Med 7, Med 4 and Battalion 1 responded to the location and found the fire had spread to three levels of the plant. Firefighters were able to quickly bring the fire under control with an interior attack and remained on scene to inspect equipment and surrounding areas.

“The plant had a fire brigade in place that was able to contain the fire until firefighters arrived,” Dakin said. “That allowed us to work quickly to extinguish the fire.”
