BCES Monitoring Weather

Residents are urged to use caution if driving conditions are hazardous Thursday morning.

Barrow County Emergency Services participated in a briefing with the National Weather Service this afternoon regarding the possibility of snow.

The NWS is predicting occasional rain and snow turning to mostly light snow after midnight and the possibility of more snowfall Thursday morning.

“They are saying that there is a chance of up to one inch of snow overnight,” said Lt. Scott Dakin, spokesman for BCES. “With that in mind, the Emergency Operation Center was opened at 4 p.m. as a precaution to monitor the weather throughout the night.”

The center will be manned by and Chief John Skinner as well as members of the Barrow County CERT team, who will work on a rotating basis. CERT members have been trained in assisting in the Emergency Operations Center and are now putting that training to use monitoring the weather situation. If call volume increases, off-duty members can be called in.

“We want to let citizens know that we are making plans if the snow does move in. We will monitor road conditions also,” Dakin said. “If the roads are slippery in the morning we are asking citizens to use caution when driving or stay home if possible.”
