Barrow County Sheriff Supports Residents' Right to Bear Arms

Sheriff Jud Smith weighs in on the topic of gun control.

Gun control has been a much discussed topic in the media lately, with Gwinnett County's sheriff going as far as saying he encourages law-abiding citizens to acquire firearms.

Barrow Patch asked Sheriff Jud Smith what his stance is on gun control.

"As the Sheriff of Barrow County I will fully exercise my power to protect and defend the Constitutional rights of the citizens of Barrow County," Smith wrote in an e-mail. "I will not stand by and allow laws to be passed that will infringe on the rights of law abiding citizens ... and [their] 2nd Amendment rights."

The U.S Constitution's Second Amendment says, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

My main objection to the tenor of the current gun control round is that the new laws seek to control the intent of an individual before any crime has been commited. We don't jail people for stnding outside a Bank and thinking about robbing it. A gun can be used to commit harm, but it is the intent of the individual that will commit the crime regardless of the means used to inflect harm. Commit a crime with a gun, give them the max penality to keep them out of socity. Commit a crime with a gun, take away the gun and don't give it back (Complete background check for all gun purchases). Commit a crime wth a gun, Punish the action to the fullest extent not the the thought about commiting the action...

Thank-you for defending our Constitutional rights! We have an awesome Sheriff!!!! The fact is we have the right to bear arms, which can not be infringed. PERIOD. Like guns or not they are here to stay. If you are against guns and don't arm yourself all I can say is that I hope someone that is armed is nearby to defend you against an armed assailant if you need it.

I believe all people should have the right to protect themselves. They should have to be checked out first, make sure they have not committed crimes against others in their past. When buying it should be mandatory they are given a class on loading and shooting, hence no accidental shooting of themselves or others. I know our sheriffs department offers womens safety classes, thanks Jud for all you do to keep us protected under your watch. Sincerely, P House

Brenda Stancil I support Sherriff Judd Smith completely. Owning guns is my 2nd Amendment right and I will not give it up. If, we, the people, allow this to happen, the only people who will have guns will be criminals and government. Enough said.

Thank you for being so very clear & concise on this matter, Sheriff Smith! This country desperately needs to get back to that on which it was first founded!

God Bless Sheriff Judd Smith, who will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that he will bear true faith and allegiance to the same.

You just got my vote. Thank god for people with common sense. A gun is a tool. To be used by someone who is not mentally ill. Lets treat the problem here. When they take our guns, whats next our freedom?
