Barrow County Deputy Stops Assault, Possible Robbery While Off Duty in Athens

The suspect is now facing charges of battery and driving on a suspended license.

A Barrow County Sheriff's Office deputy on Tuesday interrupted an assault and possible robbery in Athens, the Athens Banner-Herald reports.

Lt. Matt Guthas, who was off duty at the time, was stopped a traffic light along Atlanta Highway when he saw a man get out of a car, run to another vehicle driven by a woman and force his way inside. Guthas then ordered the man out of the car and to the ground at gunpoint, but the suspect got into his vehicle and drove away. The descriptions Guthas gave Athens-Clarke County officers resulted in authorities locating the man.

Steven Lindsay Davis, 34, was later arrested at an area apartment complex. He is charged with battery and driving on a suspended license, and an investigation continues to see if he should be charged with robbery.
