Auburn Resident Injured in Crash Involving Vehicle Fleeing from Law Enforcement

The Auburn man was a passenger in the car, which left the road, overturned numerous times and hit a tree.

An Auburn resident was injured in a crash on Interstate 85 on Tuesday, May 14, that killed one person, another passenger in the vehicle, after the driver fled from law enforcement officers. 

The crash occurred in Franklin County, and the the Athens Banner-Herald reports 20-year-old Reltheal Morton of Auburn, who was riding in the back seat, was transported by ambulance to Ty Cobb Memorial Hospital in Royston. The driver, identified as Thanquarius Calhoun, 21, of McDonough, was airlifted to a hospital in Greenville, S.C., with serious injuries.

The Georgia State Patrol was attempting to locate the next of kin for the front-seat passenger who was killed.

The Banner-Herald reports the pursuit began when a Banks County deputy attempted to stop the vehicle shortly before 2 p.m. The crash occurred after the car made contact with a GSP patrol vehicle, he said. The car left the road, overturned numerous times and hit a tree. 

The driver will be charged with first-degree vehicular homicide, felony fleeing, DUI, reckless driving and numerous other traffic violations, a GSP spokesperson told the ABH.
