Health & Fitness

October is both Domestic Violence and Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

This month seems to be covered in pink--from t-shirts, to NFL games, to walks and other fundraisers. There are reminders everywhere of the dangers of breast cancer and reminders to get mammograms.

But, we've noticed that rarely do we see purple ribbons--the color signifying domestic violence awareness.

Did you know that:

...1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer, BUT 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence?

...it is estimated that there will be 296,280 new cases of breast cancer annually BUT there will also be 1.3 million incidents of domestic violence?

...while there are approximately 39,620 deaths annually from breast cancer there are also approximately 16,800 deaths annually from domestic violence?

...most domestic violence incidents go unreported to authorities--so the numbers listed above are significantly lower than what is actually true.

We support Breast Cancer Awareness whole-heartedly, but also want to raise awareness for the severity and intensity of the domestic violence incidents in our country and the effects of domestic violence incidents affect individuals, families and communities just like breast cancer does.

So please, wear PURPLE this month, SHARE this Facebook post, encourage your local, state and federal government to FUND domestic violence research and prevention programs, help us raise awareness for Domestic Violence Awareness month in addition to Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The victims and survivors of domestic violence AND breast cancer need our support!
