Sharing the Spirit

Share in the season of giving and caring by helping brighten the spirits of children in the hospital. It won't cost you money, just a few keyboard characters and a mouse click or two.

I've been thinking about the spirit of giving that so many people feel and display during this time of year.

Why doesn't it carry over into the other months?

It feels like it comes and goes with the outside, inflatable Santas and carols. Start showing the holiday spirit too soon and you're criticized. "Don't play holiday music before X date!" Keep the decorations up days past Christmas and you're criticized. "Take the twinkle lights down already! It's January 5!" (I’m guilty of this one.)

I asked a friend at work about it and she made a good point. If we kept the giving and sharing intensity level up all year long, wouldn't that take away from the spirit of the season in December? I just think it would be wonderful if it could last all year. The increased food giving, the Salvation Army kettle collectors, the toy donations or just even the friendly and caring nature more people emit. (Someone let me out in a line of traffic yesterday and I totally attribute that to a holiday heart.)

I'm hoping those people will give some of that extra caring attention to an incredible video about young patients at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, where I work. The video asks you to "Share the Hope" by typing a message on www.sharewithchildrens.org to the hundreds of young patients who will be spending their holiday at Children's. By sending a message, you’ll brighten the spirits of the children and their families. By watching the video, you’ll help Children’s get closer to a $25,000 donation from the Verizon Foundation. Both are things that will likely carry on long after the holiday music.
