Black Friday, Minus the Deals

When the experience is more valuable than the sales.

I should be asleep. Alarm is set for 4:30 a.m. No shower is planned. Just a washcloth to my face, some toothpaste for my teeth and a sense of humor at the ready. 

I know so many others have been in lines for days (as some news stories have shared with us), trying to make sure they get their hands on one of the few hot deals that start at who-knows-what time. (Some Early Bird sales started last week, I think.) I'm reading the Facebook updates of friends who are now out in it, sharing their tales of lines, craziness and major scores. But the adult ladies of my family are getting their power sleep before we head out. While my mom, sister and teenage niece recharge, my mind is restless. Nervous energy, anxious about the scenes we may encounter and the people we stand next to who aren't always at their friendliest. 

I will brave it though because it's worth it to me. Not because of the deal of it all but because of the memories of it all. The time spent with my family ladies is priceless. We laugh. We people watch. We get a few things here and there, nothing too extreme. We laugh some more. It's more about being together. In the middle of the madhouse, we laugh in stereo.

My mom just woke up and came out of her room. Squinting her eyes at the light and gasping at me, "You still awake?!" I'm sure she's thinking I'm going to be real fun in the daylight morning. 

I think it will just increase my loopy decibels. Guess we'll see ...
