What is required to Qualify to run for City Council?!

I want to address a rumor circulating through Winder...

My husband and I own property in Ward 2. Apparently there is a rumor that I don't own property in the City of Winder. That is incorrect.

It should be clarified, however, that there are no requirements for City Council members to own property in the City, only that they reside there. Any argument that someone needs to own property in the City in order to run for office only serves to discriminate against someone based on their inability, or unwillingness to own property, and that only serves to discriminate on the basis of socioeconomic status.

So, while I am proud to say that we have a mortgage on a home in the City, it is by no means any less worthy to rent a home or reside in the City by other means! Anyone over the age of 21, residing in the City, and without certain criminal charges has the RIGHT to run for local office.

The requirements regarding the ability to run for local office, according to the Winder City Council elections page, state:

"Council Member At Large: At least 21 years of age, resident of City at least one year, not convicted or sentenced for fraudulent violation of primary or election laws, malfeasance in office or felony involving moral turpitude or conviction of domestic violence under the laws of Georgia or any other state of the United States or if convicted, full civil rights restored for at least ten years from the date of completion of the sentence without a subsequent conviction of any felony involving moral turpitude; qualified voter in the City." (The page is linked below if you would like to see it for yourself.)

I hope this helps to put the rumors to rest, that it continues to inform the citizens of the City, and that it reminds us all that accurate information is powerful!

Thanks you for your support and consideration--and get out to vote on November 5!
