Barrow County Chamber of Commerce Questions

Did you know that the Barrow County Chamber of Commerce posed questions to the Winder City Council candidates?  We were asked to respond, in writing, by tomorrow.

The questions they posed to us were:
1.) What’s your position on implementing a city tax to cover any increased costs at the local level?
2.) Why do you feel you are the best candidate for the Winder City Council?
3.) What do you see is your role in city council in economic development, to support and grow business?
4.) Do you feel local government supports economic development adequately, and should there be more or less than what is currently being done?
5.) How can we “get on the same page” to work for a common goal, and who should set that goal?

Are these the questions you would have wanted answered by the City Council candidates?  What would you have wanted to know?

While I appreciate the chance to respond to these questions, and I am thankful our responses will be shared with business leaders in the county, I am not sure why this method is the preferred method over a public forum.

When the City Council meets for work sessions or meetings, or when members of the City Council meet with constituents, they are not afforded the opportunity to respond in writing.  They are charged with responding verbally, in real time.  This assessment of the candidates, while beneficial, does not actually assess the candidates' ability to think quickly, to articulate their stance verbally, and to "put on the spot" they way they are in meetings and face-to-face.

I hope everyone's answers are taken seriously, and I hope that in this election, or at least in future elections, that the candidates will be afforded the opportunity to be seen publicly, together, responding to the issues of the day!

We’ve removed the ability to reply as we work to make improvements. Learn more here
