Since Its Founding, Nonprofit Has More Than Doubled Its Distribution of Backpacks to Foster Children

Since 2011, the organization, which serves Barrow and surrounding counties, has provided backpacks filled with essential transition supplies for foster children.

A local organization determined to ease the transition for children entering foster care by providing them with colorful backpacks filled with needed supplies is growing by leaps and bounds.

Founded in 2011, Adventure Bags began by serving six counties — BarrowOconee, Gwinnett,, Morgan, Jasper and Greene.  It has since expanded to serve an additional 10.

According to a recent post on the organization's Facebook page, 230 bags were distributed in the inaugural year and 420 bags in 2012.  That compares to 412 that have already been given out in just the first quarter of 2013.

"We have recently been contacted by Region 3 (6 counties!) to be included served by Adventure Bags, Inc!" the post reads. "None of this would be possible without the continued support of our volunteers and donations! Thank you for helping us continue to "Provide security and comfort to a child in crisis!"

Church groups and businesses around the region have helped greatly with the collection of donations and assembling the bags, and area restaurants have played a big part in fundraising efforts through Spirit Nights. The most recent event was held at Ruby Tuesday in Winder.
