This Date in History: 'Gone with the Wind' is Published

Margaret Mitchell's Southern classic was published this date in 1936.

On this date in 1936, “Gone with the Wind” was published by MacMillan Publishers.  Set in Atlanta, the book told readers the story of Georgia and the South during the Civil War and Reconstruction through its heroine, Scarlett O’Hara.

The author, Margaret Mitchell, had been a reporter with the Atlanta Journal Sunday Magazine. She started writing the book in 1926, when she was recovering from a broken ankle.

Even during the Depression, the book sold more than 1 million copies in the first six months after its publication. Since then, more than 30 million copies have been sold worldwide, making it the best-selling novel of the 20th Century.
