Cosmic Log offers a guide to watching the satellite's descent.

More than 6 tons of metal is falling from the sky.

A dead satellite the size of a school bus is expected to fall to Earth sometime this afternoon or Saturday — where will it land? No one is sure.

"There is a low probability any debris that survives re-entry will land in the United States, but the possibility cannot be discounted because of this changing rate of descent," NASA officials wrote in a status update.

According to an MSNBC.com report, NASA expects about 26 large pieces of the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite to survive re-entry through Earth's atmosphere and reach the planet's surface. The biggest piece should weigh about 300 pounds and the satellite is the largest NASA satellite to fall from space uncontrolled since 1979.
