Stay Safe this Independence Day

Here are tips to make the holiday fun and safe for all.

Swimming pools, family cookouts and flashing fireworks … It must be Independence Day! Fireworks are a long-standing tradition in America for the Fourth of July, enthralling both young and old with their colorful pyrotechnics.  It is also a busy day for emergency crews, such as fire departments, EMS, and emergency room staff, due to the possibility of injury and property damage from the misuse of fireworks.

According to the National Fire Protection Agency, in 2009, there were over 18,000 fires reported as a result of fireworks, with 1,300 resulting in structure fires. Emergency rooms treated an estimated 8,800 people for injuries related to fireworks.

Most people opt to watch a  public fireworks display, but if you’re interested in lighting up your own at home, The Georgia Office of Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner has issued  these tips:

  • Always read and follow label directions. They are there for a reason. Some fireworks are meant to be lit while on the ground, and others are shot out of a container or receptacle.
  • Only use fireworks outdoors - NEVER in the house, in the garage, or under a porch or tarp.Check your surroundings before lighting the match - check for flammable liquids, such as gas cans.
  • Never experiment or attempt to make your own firework
  • Only light one firework at a time. Also, make sure that sparks from one firework won't ignite your entire supply at once. Keep unlit fireworks well away from the ignition area.
  • Never re-ignite malfunctioning firework. Do not lean over any firework  that did not ignite, or attempt to pick it up.
  • Fireworks should only be used with close adult supervision
  • Never give fireworks to small children
  • Be sure to have water handy. Pull the hose around, or have a large bucket of water available.
  • Never throw fireworks at another person.

You should also remember to use fireworks in an open area, away from buildings and vehicles. Wetting the immediate area down before starting may prevent an accidental fire from starting. If a fire does start, call 911 immediately. It only takes a short time for a fire to get out of control.
