Road Work in Winder Will Require Overnight Lane Closures This Week

The DOT is also hosting a community information session this Thursday to inform residents on the work planned for the downtown area.

The Georgia Department of Transportation has announced road work set to take place overnights this week along Ga. Highway 11/Broad Street in downtown Winder.

Crews will close one lane nightly to install new pipe for a water line. A single lane closure will begin at 9 p.m. and continue until 6 a.m. the next day, and work will take place Monday night through Friday morning, weather permitting. No lane closures are planned Friday, Saturday or Sunday nights.

On Monday night, the right northbound lane will be closed from the railroad crossing to Laura Street. Tuesday through Thursday nights, the right northbound lane will be closed from Laura Street to Candler Street.

The work is part of a .72-mile long, $4 million project to rebuild Broad Street from the ground up, creating a stronger driving surface that the DOT says will last decades. Enhancement work includes new sidewalks, curb and gutter, benches, lighting and landscaping.

“This project reconstructs the roadway and installs the streetscape features of an Enhancement Project," Bayne Smith, Georgia DOT district engineer, said in a news release. "After the project, the roadway itself will be strong and durable, moving traffic more efficiently through Downtown. Broad Street will also be more pedestrian friendly and an attractive place to spend your time, drawing more people Downtown."
