Report: Moms are Sole or Primary Providers in 40 Percent of U.S. Households

The public is conflicted about the growing trend — are you?

A report by the Pew Research Center says mothers are the sole or primary providers in four out of 10 of the nation's households with children under age 18.

Of these "breadwinner moms," the report states, 37 percent are married mothers making a higher income than their husbands, while 63 percent are single moms.

The report also indicates public opinion differs on this growing trend — most recognize the economic benefits to families, while many voice concerns about the influence having working mothers may have on children and even marriages. The reports says 74 percent believe the increase in the number of women working has made it more difficult for parents to raise children and half say it has made marriages more difficult. The study also says 64 percent of Americans say the growing trend in single motherhood is a "big problem."
