It was custom for dry goods and department stores in Winder to close on noon Wednesdays during the summer months, according to an article printed in the The Winder News on May 30, 1935. The custom had been followed for a number of years, the story stated, so employees could have recreational time during the summer. Several stores had signed an agreement to close at noon every Wednesday from June 5 through Sept. 1, including Consolidated 5-10-25 Store, Peskni and Company, Bailey’s Department Store, Gallant-Belk Company, J. C. Pool Company, Wood’s Beauty Shop, Realistic Beauty Shop and others.
