March 20, 1969: Russell Makes Announcement

Despite announcing he was going to undergo treatment for possible cancer, the senator said he would continue to hold his seat.

U.S. Sen. Richard B. Russell of Winder announced March 20, 1969, that he had a tumor on his left lung and would undergo treatment for possible cancer. During the announcement, Russell said he planned to continue serving in the senate. The same day he made the announcement, Russell, 71, attended an event where he received the James Forrestal Memorial award.
